REGEnLIFE cures inflammatory brain diseases with light

THE GREAT CHALLENGES OF DEEPTECH (4/4). Every Friday, discover a disruptive innovation that could solve a major problem. This week, Montpellier-based Regenlife uses near-infrared light stimulation to treat concussions, certain neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, and depression. The company is seeking to raise 10 million euros.

What do Alzheimer’s disease, concussion and depression have in common? Like most diseases that affect the brain, they involve neuroinflammation. To treat them, deeptech Regenlife has been developing a non-drug approach based on light stimulation: photobiomodulation, since 2016.

Also used in dermatology, this technique, as developed by Regenlife, involves targeting the brain and intestine, which are highly connected, and bombarding them with photons – elementary particles of light – using a helmet and abdominal belt equipped with diodes.

Modulation of neuroinflammation

In the case of the headphones, light diffused in a zone of the light spectrum close to infrared is designed to stimulate the energy-producing factories of neuronal cells, the mitochondria.
